A ceiling fan is a heavier, dynamic load than a light fixture, and the box behind it has to be rated for the weight and vibration. The NEC requires that any ceiling box supporting a fan be listed for that use, mounted to a fan-rated brace or structural member, and capable of supporting at least 35 lb (NEC 314.27(C)).
Apex Power Solutions installs new and replacement ceiling fans, including new circuit and switch installs where no fixture exists today. We add the fan-rated box, run a switched leg for the light kit (or set up the remote receiver), and balance the blades before we leave.

Questions about Ceiling Fan Installation
Q: Can a ceiling fan be installed where there is no existing fixture?
A: Yes. We cut in a new ceiling location, install a fan-rated brace and box, fish a switched cable to a wall switch or extend from a nearby circuit, and finish with a small patch around the new opening.
Q: Do you replace standard light boxes with fan-rated boxes?
A: Always. Even if the existing box looks adequate, a non-fan-rated box is not allowed to support a ceiling fan. We swap to a listed fan brace and box on every install.
Q: Why do new fans sometimes wobble?
A: Wobble is almost always a blade balance issue, not a mounting issue. We use the manufacturer's balance clip and weights to bring the fan within spec before considering it complete.
